NGO LAUNCHES SECONDARY SCHOOL WASTE MANAGEMENT

In an effort to promote sustainable systems in the circular economy chain, ‘Waste Advisors’, a waste management organisation, has launched a project targeting secondary school learners in major cities.

The project aims at developing concepts for sustainable waste practices among learners, promoting waste management within schools and communities.

Waste advisors’ Project Officer responsible for Lilongwe, Geoffrey Mphangamo has said the organisation wants to promote creative and innovative ways of waste management among learners.

“The project is being implemented in 40 schools across major cities, and it’s being done in the form of a competition where learners showcase products made from waste materials,” Mphangamo explained.

He said learners from schools in Lilongwe City have demonstrated their potential in manufacturing products like briquettes, flip charts, and door mats from waste materials collected within schools.

“For example, learners from Kawale, Nanjati, Kabwabwa, and Tsabango Community Day Secondary Schools are making briquettes using paper materials,” said Mphangamo.

The organisation’s vision is to equip learners with knowledge on how to navigate economic challenges through innovation.

Benson Navaya, a Form Three student from Kawale CDSS in Lilongwe praised Waste Advisors for the project, calling it “futuristic.”

The Lilongwe City Council has also endorsed the project, recognising its importance in addressing waste management issues affecting the community.
