NEEF LOAN TRANSFORMS LUSUWIRO WOMEN GROUP

In a heartening display of determination and resilience, the Lusubiro Mkondezi women’s group from Chapumbwa Village in Nkhata-bay District has achieved unprecedented success with the support of the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).

The group, comprising subsistence rice farmers, secured a K7.5 million Farm Input Loan for the 2023/2024 farming season, which has improved their farming practices and transformed their lives.

According to Chisomo Chavula, a group member, the loan has increased their rice production from 8-10 bags to 15-18 bags per 2-acre farm, ensuring food security and economic stability for their families.

“We have seen tremendous changes in our homes and businesses. We are now harvesting twice a year and our rice business is thriving,” said Chavula.

Janet Chimalize, the group’s chairperson, attributed their success to the power of collaboration and NEEF’s affordable loans.

“We have learned that working together is key to achieving our goals. We are no longer just subsistence farmers. We are entrepreneurs with a vision to establish a company and tap into stable markets,” said Chimalize.

NEEF’s support has not only empowered these women but also contributed to Malawi’s food security and agricultural commercialisation.

Meanwhile, NEEF Chief Executive Officer Humphrey Mdyetseni has since commended the women for prudently using the loan obtained from the institution.

He added that NEEF is ready to grant the organization a new loan in a bid to further uplift their business.
