NCA/DCA BAIL FARMERS ECONOMICALLY IN CHIKWAWA

Over 1,200 small-scale farmers in the area of Senior Chief Ngabu in Chikwawa say are making huge profits from selling crops in established markets through Nansen project in the district.

A lead farmer MacDonald Phiri said since the coming of the two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) of the Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and Dan Church Aid (DCA) the lives of the community members have tremendously changed.

He said people are now able to grow crops using modern technologies that have seen them producing bumper harvest.

Phiri told ProjectM that farmers are selling their produce to established markets within their localities.

“We are no longer seeking markets for our farm produces as we are selling them at the doorstep,” he said.

Project Officer for NCA/ DCA in Chikwawa, Paul M’manjamwada said the people should not be affected by the ongoing wars in Europe.

He observed that these wars are fueling poverty, shortage of food, and climate change.

M’manjamwada also said it is for these reasons the duo NGOs have embarked on empowering the rural masses with modern farming techniques.

The project officer added that most areas in the district which have not spared the area of Senior Chief Ngabu have been severely affected by the effects of El Nino which have resulted into the prolonged dry spell and drought.

“The two Non-Governmental Organizations gave out K114 million to support 1,200 small scale farmers each getting K 80,000:00 as starter pack,” he said.

The Nansen project started in 2023 and is ending in June 2024.
