National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has stepped in to support university sports by unveiling a K12 million sponsorship package for the upcoming Tertiary Education Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) Festival, which kicks off this weekend in Lilongwe.
The sports festival, which will run for two days, will see students from 15 universities, both public and private, competing in 10 different sports disciplines including football, netball, basketball and chess.
Games will be played at Africa Bible College (ABC), Bambino School, and the Bingu National Stadium.
Speaking during the cheque handover ceremony in Blantyre, NBM’s Marketing and Corporate Affairs Manager Akossa Hiwa said the sponsorship reflects the bank’s commitment to youth empowerment and sports development.
“This is part of our comprehensive engagement in youth development in the country, we believe that sports play a crucial role in shaping young people into disciplined and focused individuals,” said Hiwa.
TESSAM Treasurer Tadala Namaona expressed gratitude for the timely support from the bank, noting that organising a national event of this magnitude would not have been possible without financial backing.
“We are truly thankful to National Bank for stepping in at the right time. This support means a lot to the students and the entire university sports community,” said Namaona.
He was accompanied by Edward Malumero, a representative from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences, who echoed the appreciation and emphasised the importance of corporate involvement in student initiatives.
The TESSAM Sports Festival is expected to foster unity, talent development and healthy competition among university students from across the country.
