The National Commission for Science and Technology (NACST) has dared innovators in the country to come up with innovations that can substitute the dependence on non-renewable energy sources.
The NACST made the remarks amid calls from the government, urging investors to create inventions in Renewable Energy Technology (RET).
The commission in conjunction with the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) has urged interested innovators to apply for grants to create inventions in renewable energy technology.
NACST Director General Gift Kadzamira said the hackathon [event of innovators and developers to share ideas and solve solutions] will be held under the theme “Innovations in Local Manufacturing”.
“This hackathon will be held in response to the call made by President Lazarus Chakwera who at the official launch of the University Pod (UniPod) directed that the NACST should fund the first experiment to be carried out at the UniPod,” he said.
She added that the competition aims to advance research and innovation and to drive tangible outcomes in the development of renewable energy technology components.
“We also believe this will serve as an opportunity for innovators to share knowledge and capacity building for long term impact,” said Kadzamira.
Members of the NACST and the UniPod have finalised discussions on the Hackathon, which is being touted as important in the country’s dream of achieving an inclusively wealthy and reliable industrialised upper middle income country by the year 2063.
