Australia-based Malawian netball star Mwawi Kumwenda-M’bwana is set to bounce back into action after giving birth to boy Maximus with a return to Peninsula Waves.
The netball star starred for Melbourne Vixens for eight years after she joined from Peninsula Waves.
A statement from Peninsula Waves Netball Club said the club is excited to announce that Mwai Kumwenda has signed as part of the Championship Team for the 2025 season.
“We can’t wait to continue to be part of Mwai’s netball journey as she returns to the court after the birth of her son Maximus. MJ will be a great asset for our club on and off the court.
“She brings lots of experience playing netball at the top level, including representing her country Malawi at World Cups and many years with the Melbourne Vixens. She will be an amazing on court leader to our young team as well as a great asset to all our pathway players.
“MJ started her netball journey at Peninsula Waves and has remained a loved part of our Waves family throughout all her netball endeavours and we can’t wait to have Mwai, Wanangwa and Maximus around the club.”
Vixens stated on its website www.melbournevixens.com.au that MJ will not be contracted in their squad of 10 for 2025, but will remain connected to the team in an off-court capacity.
In an interview, Kumwenda-M’bwana commended Vixens for supporting her during the past eight years.
“I am grateful for the club’s [Vixens’] support as we settle into our new family life. For now I am excited to keep working with both Netball Victoria and the Vixens off the court and we will see what the future brings for me on the court,” said Mwawi, who also answers to the name MJ.
Among others Vixens took good care of her after she suffered an anterior cruciate ligament which kept her out of the whole season in 2018.
