The recent discovery about this national beauty is that there has long been a belief that the famous stone remains an ending mystery, sparking curiosity and admiration for the creativity of our ancestors.

In literal translation, Mwala Wa Mphini, means, “a rock marked with traditional tattoos” hence its geomorphic formation presents a picture of scars that amaze locals and visitors.

However, the art work of this captivating heritage, which offers a plethora of attractions preserves stories that have echoed through centuries.

Frank Raphael Maluwa from Traditional Authority Liwonde in Machinga, but staying in Mangochi has shared that the unique rock, which is dating back several thousands of years, offers visitors a chance to experience Malawi’s breathtaking scenery and extra-ordinary biodiversity.

Maluwa told ProjectM that the hidden gem has the potential to become a flagship destination for Malawi’s tourism industry, but lack of infrastructure and investment at such places, limits its growth and contribution to the economy.

“The government should work to develop infrastructure and facilities around this breathtaking landscape to attract more foreign tourists and domestic visitors because if it is well preserved, this glamorous stone can play a crucial role in boosting tourism in the country.

“Such developments align perfectly with our government’s Reset Agenda, which aims to enable the tourism industry to recover and achieve our development aspirations as outlined in our National Vision 2063,” he said.

Acknowledging the weight of this responsibility, Minister of tourism Vera Kamtukule says with a focus on tourism and other sectors as championed by President Lazarus Chakwera, the country is moving in the right direction towards achieving its National Development Goals.

“This sector is a significant contributor and key driver of Malawi’s economy that offers great opportunities for emerging economies and developing countries. Let us take this opportunity by immersing ourselves in the country’s breathtaking beauty to unlock Malawi’s full potential,” she said.

As the country celebrates tourism month, Malawians should take a leading role by elevating the profile of tourism, and support efforts to grow the sector.
