Mvera Innovation City Project on Track

Government says the implementation of the Mvera Innovation City project located in Mvera, Dowa, is on course, with plans to start building critical infrastructures at an advanced stage.

Deputy Commissioner for physical planning in the ministry of Lands, Philemon Mkwezalamba has confirmed the development, saying funds for the implementation of the first phase have already been disbursed.

Addressing the media Thursday in Lilongwe, Mkwezalamba stressed government’s commitment to the smooth implementation of the project, adding that currently, 207 hectares of land has already been allocated.

“We are very happy as the ministry because all the affected individuals have already been compensated and relocation plans have already been drawn,” he said.

Mkwezalamba said the Mvera Innovation City will offer a conducive environment for manufacturing.

“This innovation city will be a first of its kind in Malawi and will particularly benefit companies currently operating abroad in countries such as China,” said Mkwezalamba.

In his remarks, Deputy Director responsible for standards and technologies at the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA), Nicholas Kanyenda described the project as very critical in the country’s quest to achieve the much touted 2063 development agenda.

Kanyenda, who is also the project coordinator for the project, underlined the initiative’s sustainable approach to rural development, designed to foster economic growth, technological innovation, job creation and community upliftment.

“All these pillars mentioned here align very well with the Malawi 2063 vision,” said Kanyenda.

Upon it’s completion, the innovation city will establish a hub for business, technology and innovation while prioritising environmental sustainability and community welfare.

According to officials, the city will also have critical infrastructure vital for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) advancement.
