MUST GRADUATES SET UP FIRM FOR CLEAN ENERGY SOLUTIONS

In a bid to promote the use of clean energy, 14 graduates from Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) have established a company called Earthwise Group Limited.

The graduates, who hold bachelor’s degrees in Sustainable Energy Systems obtained in 2023, have established the company that will be providing eco-friendly, efficient and effective energy in the country.

Speaking in an interview, James Kalawa, one of the owners, said they thought of coming up with an innovative way of providing energy in an environmentally friendly way.

“Our aim is to generate energy and be able to transmit it to everyone in a sustainable way. The idea is to promote the use of clean energy in the nation,” he said.

He said they are working on finding solutions for issues such as low access to energy-efficient technologies, poor energy management, carbon footprint, integration and optimisation of renewable energy, high energy costs and consumption and energy waste and inefficiency.

“Right now, we are working to utilize locally available resources and materials such as briquettes. We have also linked up with Cubix/Robotics to start producing our products. We are also in early stages of developing Earthwise bulbs,” said Kawalala.

Last year, the team developed the MUST energy policy, which is open to the public to appreciate what the team can do.

“Unemployment remains a huge challenge yet people have the skills and knowledge which we can easily monetise and change not only our lives but also many Malawians,” he said.

EarthWise Energy has since advised students to have an entrepreneurial mindset saying there are a lot of challenges that need to be addressed through solutions adding that the company is running on individual savings.
