MUSICIANS, ENTREPRENEURS MOURN “SOLDIER” LUCIUS BANDA

As tributes continue to pour in following the death of music icon, Lucius Banda, some local musicians have described him as “irreplaceable”.

The Musicians Union of Malawi (MUM), whom Banda is credited to have been among those behind its formation, has also described his death as “a monumental loss for the Malawian music” industry.

A statement signed by General Secretary for the association Tonney Chitimatima has also described Banda, popularly known as “Soldier” as someone whose contributions to the music industry are immense.

“He tirelessly supported up-and-coming musicians, providing platforms for them to showcase their talents,” the statement said.

The statement further said that Soldier’s financial support and mentorship were instrumental in the careers of many artists who are now prominent names in the music industry.

Lilongwe-based renowned entrepreneur Chifuniro Duncan has also described Banda’s passing as a huge blow to his business, saying the artist used to buy merchandise from him.

“As you know that Soldier also owned a lodge in Balaka, I used to supply a lot of things for that lodge,” said Duncan.

Soldier Lucius Banda died Sunday aged 53 at Sunninghill Hospital in South Africa where he was receiving treatment for kidney problems.

He will be laid to rest on Thursday in Balaka District.
