In a bid to bridge the digital divide and promote gender equity in the technology industry, Abgail Kalua, a Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) graduate, has launched an initiative to impart digital skills to young women and girls.
Through her “TECREATIVA” initiative, Kalua aims to inspire a generation of female tech enthusiasts who will redefine innovation in the digital landscape.
“The overall goal is to empower young people to harness the power of digital literacy, innovation and entrepreneurship; hence, fostering the participation of women in the digital economy,” said Kalua.
The 30-year-old graduate, who holds a degree in Business Administration, emphasised that her motivation stemmed from recognising the under-representation of women in the tech industry.
“This project underscores our unwavering commitment to gender equity and inclusion, ensuring that no woman or girl is left behind in the digital transformation era,” said Kalua.
Kalua’s initiative has already borne fruit, with over 200 young women and girls benefiting from her training programmes.
Tiwonge Nkhambule, one of the beneficiaries, praised Kalua in empowering her to utilise essential digital competencies.
“I have gained valuable skills that have prepared me for greater opportunities. After acquiring my free digital skills, I plan to utilise these principles to drive meaningful change in my professional endeavors,” said Nkhambule.
Despite facing challenges such as financial support and addressing societal norms that discourage women from pursuing careers in technology, Kalua remains committed to her mission.
She has invested over K40 million in the project and plans to introduce advanced tech training, mentorship programmes and partnerships with local and international organisations.
“We would like to establish a digital innovation hub to foster creativity and entrepreneurship in underserved areas,” said Kalua.
Some of the beneficiaries have already started their own businesses, while others have secured employment locally and remotely.
As Kalua continues to empower young women and girls with digital skills, she is shaping the future of tech-driven social change and creating opportunities that truly make a difference.
