MISA MALAWI TRAINS JOURNALISTS IN INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISM

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Malawi has partnered with the Canadian government to train journalists in investigative journalism,the initiative aims to promote social accountability and empower journalists to uncover impactful stories, particularly in local government.

Speaking during the workshop which MISaA organised in northern region, chairperson Golden Matonga emphasised the need for journalists to have skills in Investigative Journalism to enable them write and report impactful stories to the community they are in.

“MISA Malawi is committed to promoting free expression, access to information,journalists need skills and courage to conduct investigative journalism stories that hold duty bearers accountable,jouurnalists must ask relevant questions and report on issues in a manner that drives impact,” stated Matonga.

The training is part of MISA Malawi’s efforts to promote transparency and accountability in local government,by supporting journalists, the organisation aims to create a more informed and engaged citizenry.

One of the participants, Ephraim Mkali Banda, who works with PL FM said the Training was an eye opener to the journalists and that they will be able to use the skills they have acquired.

“The training is designed to equip journalists with the necessary skills to conduct thorough investigations and report on issues that affect local communities, with ethics and skills, we will achieve a lot, and we will bring out more investigative journalism stories,” said Mkali Banda.

Matonga emphasised the importance of the media industry in ensuring duty bearers are held accountable. 

Through this partnership with the Canadian government, MISA Malawi hopes to foster a culture of investigative journalism in Malawi, ultimately contributing to good governance and the fight against corruption.
