Ministry of Gender Sets Tone on Early Childhood Education

Ministry of Gender, Community and Social Welfare has planned to place on payroll over 30,000 childcare givers by 2030, to strengthen the quality of education services from the foundation stage.

Statistics shows that the country has 13,000 Community Based Childcare Centre (CBCC) but only 2,000 care givers are getting honorarium.

This was revealed during the official handover of Kalira Community-Based Care Centre worth K170 million to Yamba Malawi, in Mitundu, Traditional Authority Chingala in Lilongwe by the National Bank of Malawi.

Making his contributions, Acting Director of Children Affairs in the Ministry of Gender, Justin Hamera said achieving literacy requires reducing reliance on volunteer caregivers.

Hamera added that the facility will improve education standards in Community-Based Childhood Centres (CBCC) thereby helping government achieve sustainable goals.

“We are in talks with the Ministry of Finance to ensure childcare givers are paid.

“Nurseries play a crucial role in the education system, contributing to better long-term outcomes for children and caregivers deserve consideration.”

Speaking at the event, Executive Director for Yamba Malawi, Gertrude Kabwazi called for active participation in development to ensure that the facility is properly managed.

In his remarks, William Chatsala, Head of Corporate Banking at National Bank of Malawi said that the bank has prioritised infrastructure development as a cornerstone for shaping responsible citizens.

National bank is committed to investing in early childhood development, improving access to quality education for young learners.

“In partnership with Yamba Malawi and the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Welfare, we will provide a safe environment for children aged 36 to 59 months to develop essential skills.”

Chatsala, however, said there is an urgent need for better infrastructure for early childhood education, nationwide as they play a crucial role in education.
