Water and Sanitation Minister Abida Sidik Mia has urged the communities to take up integrated agriculture, saying it is crucial realising bumper harvest in the country.
The minister made the remarks during the launch of the 2024 Ngabu ASP Manure Production at Msomo ground in the area of Traditional Authority Ngabu in Chikwawa.
She said integrated farming can ably address the food insecurity Malawi is going through if it is properly made use of.
Mia, who is also the Member of Parliament for Chikwawa Nkombezi commended people in her constituency for their keen interest in the making of manure.
“Manure production is a good move to address the challenge of nutrients for the soil which is going to help them to harvest bumper harvest,” she said.
The minister also paid a visit to Thiramsembe Irrigation Scheme which has 10 hectares but is not fully operational due to some problems.
However, she pledged to ensure that the scheme becomes operational.
“I am going to support with my personal resources so that farmers are back on track in farming; hence, in line with the 2063 Agenda,” said Mia.
In his remarks, Group Village Headman Goma hailed the minister for visiting the area.
He said the pledge she has made will help to revamp the scheme so that it becomes functional.
“Farmers are not making use of Thiramsembe Irrigation Scheme because of the failure of some equipment,” said the traditional leader.
