Mchinji-Based Innovator Unveils Water Pump

In a quest to mitigate impact of hunger and beat the high cost of irrigation equipment, Mchinji-based innovator, Christopher Chimutu has designed a water pump capable of pumping water faster with less effort.

Chimutu, who is the founder and managing director of a company calledElite Pumps, assembles durable and affordable pumps that have been touted as reliable.

He says the pump can among others, be used for irrigation as well as domestic purposes.

“My invention is simple, it is simply an assembling of pipes that are carefully measured, cut and then assembled to create a pump which sucks in water when it has been dipped in water,” said Chimutu.

The innovator has indicated that he developed passion for innovation after noticing that a lot of people, especially farmers were spending huge amounts of money and effort to practice irrigation farming.

The Mchinji-based seasoned health practitioner says he decided to think outside the box by creating a solution that can empower farmers to boost their yields.

“So, apart from domestic use, this pump is also very effective in irrigation because one person can use it and pump enough water to irrigate acres of farmland,” said Chimutu.

Currently, his pumps have already gained popularity as farmers around Mchinji and surrounding districts have now started ordering them.

“Farmers, who have already bought it, can agree with me that this is an investment you won’t have to replace anytime soon,” he added.

Lilongwe-based farmer, Falesi Michembo, has described Chimutu’s pumps as transformative.

“I bought his pump in 2024 and it has really helped me to venture in winter cropping,” said Michembo.

Christopher Chimutu’s vision is to see his pumps gain recognition across the country.
