M’bang’ombe Girls Break Barriers with Tailoring Venture

Amid continued limited employment opportunities, a group of enterprising young women from M’bang’ombe Village in Traditional Authority Kabudula in Lilongwe has launched a tailoring and designing venture.

The venture, dubbed Khalidwe wear, is a brainchild of girls aged between 18 and 25.

Leader of the grouping, Idah Nyirenda has told ProjectM in an interview that the decision to venture into entrepreneurship was taken to counter the temptations facing modern girls.

“We noticed that there were limited employment opportunities available to us, so we decided to take matters into our own hands,” said Nyirenda.

The Khalidwe wear makes school uniforms, reusable sanitary pads and other stuff.

“We are thrilled to have taken this step as it has enabled us to earn a living and gain financial independence,” said Nyirenda.

She added that through Khalidwe wear, the girls are not only earning a living but also preventing themselves from falling prey to early marriages.

“We are proud to be empowering ourselves and taking control of our lives,” said Nyirenda.

Going forward, the group plans to use profits being realised from the venture to pursue university studies.

Girls rights activist and executive director of Citizen Impact Organisation, Chimwemwe Banda has hailed the girls, dubbing them role models.

“What these young girls are doing is an inspiration to others,” said Banda.
