MANCHEWE FALLS: UNLOCKING MALAWI’S TOURISM POTENTIAL

Malawi is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking waterfalls, and Manchewe Falls is one of the most majestic and Highest in the country.

Located in the Livingstonia area of Northern Malawi’s Rumphi District, this natural wonder stands at an impressive 125 feet above mean sea level, surrounded by lush forests.

According to John Sayilence, a resident from Livingstonia, Manchewe Falls has the potential to boost tourism in Malawi.

Discovered in 1891 by Dr. Robert Laws, the falls offer a comfortable base for travellers and are a popular destination for tourists throughout the country.

“It’s one of the major tourist destinations in Malawi and the country’s highest year-round waterfall,” said Sayilence.

“It’s a beautiful and easy hike from the visitor centre, with breathtaking views. We should promote tourism in our country by visiting and exploring the stunning Manchewe Falls.”

Sayilence believes that Manchewe Falls has immense potential to become one of the best tourist destinations in Malawi, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the thrill of the waterfall’s mist and scenery. He emphasised the need for Malawians to work towards developing a vibrant and sustainable tourist sector that benefits the country’s economy and its people.

“As a country, we should encourage everyone to support and promote tourism. We need to focus on implementing strategic initiatives to enhance tourism infrastructure, improve visitor experiences, expand tourism development and create employment opportunities,” he said.

The popular waterfall is an ideal location to showcase the tourism industry’s potential for growth and resilience. Recent improvements to the site include a new accessible viewing platform with spectacular views of the falls, highlighting the country’s rich culture and attracting tourists.

It is also believed that back in the days local people used to escape to the caves behind the falls to hide from slave traders.
