Malawi’s Welcome to Maula Prison’ Set for South Africa Premiere

After captivating audiences across Malawi, the highly anticipated film ‘Welcome to Maula Prison’ is now heading to South Africa for its premiere at the Newtown Music Factory in Johannesburg on June 7, 2025.

The announcement has excited Malawian film fans in South Africa, many of whom are eager to see a local story take centre stage in an international venue.

The film, which draws its name from one of Malawi’s maximum prison, was first showcased in the country’s three major cities; Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Its gritty portrayal of life behind bars combined with powerful performances, has earned it acclaim for authenticity and emotional depth.

Speaking ahead of the South African premiere, the film’s producer Kendall Kamwendo, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support the film has been accorded in Malawi.

“The feedback was beyond what we expected, People saw their stories reflected on screen. Now, this is a moment for Malawians in South Africa to come together and experience something deeply rooted in their identity,” he said.

The event will feature not only the screening of the film but also live DJ sets, performances from local artists and an opportunity for fans to interact with the cast.

Charges for entry have been set at R250 for VIP, R150 for standard and R100 for advance tickets.
