Malawi’s Temwa Named Player of Month in US

Kansas City Malawian forward Temwa Chawinga has been named the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Month for March, following an impressive performance where she scored three goals and provided three assists.

This recognition comes just days after she was featured on a billboard in Times Square, New York City, showcasing her growing influence in the league.

She said: “I’m incredibly honoured to be named Player of the Month,” Chawinga said. It’s been a fantastic start to the season, and I’m grateful for the support from my teammates and coaches.

“Being on the billboard in Times Square was such a surreal experience and I am excited to keep working hard and helping the team succeed.”

Chawinga’s early season contributions follow a remarkable 2024 campaign, where she finished as Kansas City’s top scorer with 20 goals and registered 6 assists.

Her standout performances earned her several accolades, including a place in the NWSL Best XI, the league’s prestigious honor recognising the top players across all teams.

Additionally, Chawinga was a finalist for the NWSL Most Valuable Player award and helped lead Kansas City to the playoffs for the first time in several years.

“The award wasn’t just just about me it’s a reflection of the hard work and teamwork we have as a squad. Last season was an incredible journey, and I’m excited to build on that success with my teammates,” she said.

Chawinga’s ability to score goals, create assists and contribute to her team’s overall success has made her one of the most exciting players in the NWSL.

Her performance in March is just the latest chapter in what is shaping up to be another stellar season for the forward.
