Members of Parliament on November 22 donated assorted items valued at K9 million to Malingunde School for the Blind in Lilongwe.
The donation, was made through contributions of members of the August House, Parliamentary Staff and generous donors.
Speaking during the presentation, Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara, said the donation was part of Parliament’s commitment and corporate social responsibility to alleviate some of the challenges the school faces.
‘’This demonstrates our chapters commitment to community service and helping those in need. We underscore the critical needs of the school and we promise to improve the well-being of the school,’’ said Hara.
In receiving the donation, Head teacher of Malingunde School for the blind Vincent Mathanki, expressed huge delight for the kind gesture and called on other well-wishers to emulate Parliament’s generosity emphasising that the school relies on the support and collaboration of citizens of this country.
‘’We are very grateful for a timely and well needed donation. We will not take this for granted because the donated materials will address pressing challenges,’’ said Mathanki.
The Speaker of Parliament was joined by dignitaries, including Chairperson of the Parliamentary Appointments Committee Joyce Chitsulo, Members of Parliament as well as representatives from the Ministry of Education.
The National Assembly convened its ever outside meeting at Dedza Stadium, marking a groundbreaking achievement in the country’s legislative history.
This year’s Parliamentary week was held from November 18 to 22 to promote public awareness of Parliament’s functions under the theme ‘KNOW YOUR PARLIAMENT.’
