MALAWIANS URGED TO SUPPORT INNOVATORS

Malawians have been implored to support innovators, saying they have the potential to change the economic status of the country.

President Lazarus Chakwera made the appeal Tuesday at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe during the commemoration of World creativity and Innovation Day.

The President led the commemorations held under the theme “Step out, Create and Innovate for the Malawi we Want”.

Speaking during the function, Dr Chakwera said time has come for innovators to be given an opportunity to showcase their skills.

“My government has always preferred hiring people with special skills because I know that these people possess skills that can help to navigate through economic challenges rocking the country,” he said.

The president took time to appreciate various individuals and groups who showcased their products at the function.

Some of the products that were on display include locally assembled vehicles, locally manufactured Unmanned Aircraft (drone) and locally manufactured reusable sanitary pads, just to mention a few.

“I have seen that some of you here have brought me products such as reusable sanitary pads, irrigating machines and other machines, innovation works which I believe can help us economically if well supported,” said Chakwera.

He then called on innovators to come out and utilise loan opportunities being offered by the state owned National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF).

One of the innovators, who showcased her reusable sanitary pads at the function, Chimwemwe Banda underlined the need for Malawians to embrace local products.

The Mzuzu-based innovator said her sanitary pads have helped a lot of girls to practice good hygiene measures during menstruation.

In 2002, the United Nations set aside 21 April as the World Creativity and Innovation Day.

The day was set aside to advocate for and raise awareness about the crucial role of creativity and innovation in global development.

But Malawi commemorated the day on the 30th of April, 2024.
