Malawian Star Onesimus Wins Best Music Video at Africa Awards

Malawi’s Afro-pop sensation, Onesimus, has clinched the ‘Best Music Video’ award at the prestigious Young Achievers Africa Awards held in Kigali, Rwanda. 

This accolade marks a significant milestone as his first major international recognition in 2025, further solidifying his status as a leading figure in African music.

The award-winning video, ‘Controller’, has been making waves across the continent, earning Onesimus widespread acclaim. 

In 2024, the song secured the Song of the Year award at the Music Video Africa Awards (MVAA) in Lagos, Nigeria, and contributed to his Best Male Artist win at the HAPA Awards in Tanzania. 

Expressing his gratitude, Onesimus took to social media to thank his fans, affectionately known as the ‘Butterlions’, stating: “Thank you Butterlions, Thank you Malawi. This award is not just a personal achievement but a victory for the entire Malawian music industry.”

In 2022 his song ‘Green Light’, Red Light’ was featured in a Blood and Water series in South Africa and he became the third Malawian to be featured on the soapies after Gemini Major and producer/trapper Jillz, showcasing his international appeal. 

The Young Achievers Africa Awards, established in 2011, celebrate excellence across various sectors, including music, entrepreneurship, and social impact.

This year, he kicked off with two singles ‘Tabwera’, and ‘Cigarette’ which have received a warm reception from fans.
