Malawi’s star netball shooter Mwawi Kumwenda is set to join the West Coast Fever for the 2025 Suncorp Super Netball season, marking a new chapter in her illustrious career.
Kumwenda, who has made a name for herself as one of the world’s top goal shooters, will replace Jamaican international Jhaniele Fowler-Nembhard, who is unavailable for the season due to pregnancy.
Kumwenda’s move to the Fever comes after a standout career with the Melbourne Vixens, where she played from 2017 to 2024.
Throughout her career, Kumwenda has amassed over 4,500 goals in 135 national league appearances.
Her proven ability to perform at the highest level, including being named the 2015 Netball World Cup Player of the Tournament, makes her an invaluable asset to the Fever squad.
West Coast Fever’s Head Coach, Dan Ryan expressed his excitement about Kumwenda’s signing.
“Mwawi is a fierce competitor with incredible passion and determination. She has the experience and grit that will be vital for us as we head into the new season. I have no doubt she will rise to the challenge.”
Speaking in an interview, Kumwenda said she is eager to begin her time with the Fever.
“I’m really looking forward to starting this new chapter of my career with the Fever and moving to Perth. It’s an exciting opportunity, and I can’t wait to get started.”
Kumwenda, who previously played for Melbourne Vixens in the Suncorp Super Netball League from 2014 to 2016, will make her debut for the Fever in Round 1, when the team faces the Swifts at the RAC Arena.
