Malawian women’s footballer Temwa Chawinga has made history in the Nation Women Soccer League in the US when scored her 19th goal of the season to become an all-time top goal scorer for the country.
She made the record when her team Kansas City Current beat Bay 1-0 away to take her tally to 19 in 24 matches.
Temwa equalled the league’s all-time record when she equalled Australian footballer Samantha Kerr’s tally of 18 goals she made in 2019 while playing for Chicago Red Stars.
During the match, monitored on television, the Malawi was never given breathing space, but she proved her prowess by scoring a brilliant solo effort.
Temwa dispossessed her opponent and held on to unleash a powerful shot that eluded their Bay FC goalkeeper.
However, it was not a walk in the park for KC Current as they survived scaring moments when Bay attacked.
Chawinga has also opened up a six-point gap with her closest rival Zambian Barbara Banda of league leaders Orlando Pride.
Meanwhile, KC Current have moved to third position with 49 points, just a point behind second-placed Gotham FC and two ahead of fourth-placed Washington Spirit.
Her team paid tribute to the Malawian, saying: “First-ever home match clinched. Chawinga breaks single season goal record. KC Current reaches 50 goals scored.”
In a post on her Facebook Page, Temwa simply said: “We keep on moving forward.”
Her sister France-based footballer Tabitha congratulated Temwa.
“Congratulations my dear sister Temwa for the feat you have achieved. As we always say, sky is not the limit but it is home. Keep them goals coming,” she wrote in her Facebook Page
