The Malawi Under-19 Women’s Cricket National Team defied all odds to win the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup sub-regional qualifiers after securing a thrilling two-wicket victory over Kenya at the Gahaga Ovan Stadium in Kigali, Rwanda.
Ketrina Chingaipe inspired the team to overcome highly-fancied and pre-tournament favourites Kenya with exceptional performance.
With 28 runs off 23 balls and an impactful wicket, led to her being named the Player of the Match.
Meanwhile, Malawi National Council of Sports, which contributed a lot for the team to participate, is overwhelmed with joy for the stellar performance.
Reads a statement from Sports Council: “We have officially beaten Kenya and crowned champions of the Africa Sub-Regional Division 2 qualifiers.
“Join us in celebrating this remarkable achievement by the Malawi Under-19 Women’s National Cricket Team as they showcased their fighting spirit and determination on the international stage.”
Malawi coach Gershom Mtambalika applauded the team for the historical victory.
“It has been an amazing tournament for the girls. They grew in confidence with each passing game.
They faced a stern test. Kenya represented the quality we will be up against in the next division.”
Malawi finished the tournament with unbeaten run after seeing off E-Swatini, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Botswana and Lesotho before the Match against Kenya.
