MALAWI U-19 CRICKET GEAR FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIERS

The Malawi women’s Under-19 and senior men’s national teams are set for the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Cup qualifiers which start this weekend.

The women’s under-19 team leave for Kigali, Rwanda this Friday for the International Cricket Council (ICC) Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup Africa Division One qualifiers while the senior men’s team will participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Sub-regional Africa Division Two qualifiers in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The women’s Under-19 team made a history when it qualified during division two qualifiers last month in Rwanda.

They will qualify for the ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup finals in Malaysia next year if they do well in the tournament scheduled for September 22 to 29.

During the luncheon Malawi National Council of Sports organised on Wednesday in Blantyre, Under-19 Women’s captain Ketrina Chingaipe said they are motivated for the showdown.

“We are determined to continue from where we stopped. We are highly motivated to do the nation proud,” she said.

Senior Men’s team coach Gershom Mtambalika said the senior men’s team they are determined to qualify to replicate the women’s Under-19 team’s feat.

Cricket Malawi president Vivek Ganesan told ProjectM the two events offer Malawi an great opportunity to make history.

“If our junior women’s team wins their next five games, they will earn a ticket to the World Cup finals and the men’s team are determined to replicate what their junior women did a few weeks ago. They have been working hard
during preparations and we are confident that they will make us proud.”

Malawi National Council of Sports chief executive officer Henry Kamata appealed to the two teams to fight their all and make Malawi proud.

He also urged the companies, organisations as well as individuals to support the teams.

“The teams are carrying the Malawi flag and that should give them pride. They are representing over 18 million Malawians, who are eager to hear about the good news from the qualifiers,” he said.
