Malawi will participate in the Confederation of University and College Sports Association Africa (CUCSA) Region 5 Games in Pretoria, South Africa scheduled for July 7 to July 12.
Malawi National Council of Sports said in a statement that Team Malawi will be represented by the Tertiary Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) which comprises university and college institutions.
Malawi will have 78 athletes who will participate in netball, men’s football, men’s and women’s athletics, men’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball.
“The team consists of 78 athletes who are prepared to represent the nation with proud and determination,” reads the statement in part.
Vice-President of TESSAM Geoffrey Biya told ProjectM that he is optimistic that the athletes have prepared well to win medals.
“Our athletes have trained hard and are motivated to give their best performances. We are proud to represent Malawi on this prestigious platform and look forward to competing against our peers from across the region,” he said.
The CUCSA Region 5 Games will bring together athletes from six countries, namely Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the hosts South Africa.
The competition will be in seven sport codes; netball, basketball, chess, football, table tennis and volleyball.
Sports Council said the CUCSA Region 5 Games not only promote sporting excellence but also foster unity and solidarity among young athletes in tertiary institutions in the region.
Malawi last hosted the CUCSA Games in 2022
