Malawian kickboxer Jimmy Katsoka has won gold at the Desert Storm Championship held in Namibia on Saturday.
The kickboxer, who travelled by road won gold medal in the 77 Kg Point fighting kickboxing category.
Malawi Kickboxing Association general secretary, Bright Limani in an interview with ProjectM applauded Katsoka for the feat.
“Although he was not well-funded due to the fact that the association did not have enough funds to assist him, he put in more work and won gold for the country. Malawi was supposed to send four fighters but due to funding constraints only one fighter went. Jimmy was funded by well-wishers including Honourable Lipipa, MP.
“We are happy to produce another masterclass performance in Namibia. We appeal to well-wishers and government to fund our activities. As a sport, we have the history of winning medals for this country.”
On his part, Katsoka said he was happy to have won gold which has put Malawi on the map.
“I am so happy to win gold for Malawi. I appeal to Malawi government to invest in minority sports such as kickboxing. Minority sports can bring more glory to the country,” he said.
Malawi National Council of Sports spokesperson Edgar Ntulumbwa commended the boxer, saying it shows that the sport is gaining ground.
