Minister of tourism Vera Kamtukule says Malawi has treasures which if well developed and promoted, will not only generate significant revenue but also foster economic growth.
Kamtukule made the remarks on 20th September, 2024 when she embarked on a familiarisation trip to Sapitwa point, the highest peak of the Mulanje Mountain.
She said Malawi is home to a number of tourist attractions including the calm shores of Lake Malawi, the towering beauty of Zomba plateau, the wildlife sanctuaries of Liwonde National Park and many others that have stood the best of time without losing value and survived from generation to generation.
According to the Minister, September, being a tourism month, is a wonderful opportunity to honour the rich tapestry of travel experiences available within our country saying this is the right time to revel in the diverse and awe-inspiring landscapes, vibrant cultures, and warm hospitality that the country offers.
The Honourable Minister adds: “As we celebrate the pinnacle of tourism month, there is no better way to showcase the beauty of Malawi than by exploring breathtaking sights such as Sapitwa Peak, the highest point in Malawi standing at 3,002 meters above sea level.
“Hiking Mulanje Mountain is an experience that pushes your limits and rewards you with unparalleled views of our country’s raw and rugged beauty. Standing at the summit of Sapitwa where the world stretches beneath your face, is a reminder of what Malawi has to offer.
The tourism minister stated that the initiative sought to connect various tourist spots, activities and services within the country thereby promoting sustainable tourism.
“As we promote and develop the tourism sector, I urge all of us to take pride in what we have and invite the world to see it for itself. As the warm heart of Africa, our country’s warmth and beauty are unrivalled, and it is up to us to carry that message forward and make tourism month remarkable,” said Kamtukule.
She has also encouraged Malawians to continue patronising the country’s remarkable destinations, share their stories and raise awareness of the exceptional experiences that the country offers.
“Tourism month not only showcases the diverse offerings but also highlights the sector’s significant contribution to Malawi’s economy. Let us join hands in championing local travel and embracing the myriad adventures to help our economy grow,” she said.
Meanwhile, Mount Mulanje Conservation Trust Communications Officer Kondwani Chamwala has commended team adventure for taking the Minister up the Mountain saying this will help to further boost the local economy.
Chamwala told ProjectM that transforming Malawi’s tourism industry will have an impact on the economy and citizens’ livelihoods.
He said: “We don’t need to wait for others to come and tell us what to do, but we can still utilize what is known as domestic tourism whereby the local Malawians should be able to explore and appreciate the natural beauty of this country and in the process, promote economic growth, and environmental sustainability.
“September is celebrated all over the world as tourism month and it is the duty of everyone to commit to sustainable tourism practices that prioritize the well-being of our planet and its people.”
