Malawi’s government has declared November as National Education Month, starting this year.
Education Minister Madalitso Kambauwo Wirima made the announcement last week in Lilongwe as they were getting prepared for the World Teacher’s Day commemoration that was commemorated on 25 October.
“This initiative recognizes teachers’ vital work and promotes education nationwide,” Minister Wirima explained.
“World Teacher’s Day unites teachers, students, policymakers and stakeholders to celebrate successes, address challenges and plan for the future.”
Wirima emphasized teachers’ crucial role in shaping future leaders.
“Their dedication is instrumental in building our nation’s future,” she said.
Grace Chonzi praised the government’s move, acknowledging teachers’ significant contributions despite facing hardships.
“Teachers persistently serve our children amidst daunting challenges: inadequate housing, limited teaching resources and scarce learning materials,” Chonzi noted.
Malawi’s education sector faces notable challenges, including teacher shortages, inadequate infrastructure and insufficient funding.
By declaring National Education Month, Malawi’s government aims to raise awareness, foster collaboration and enhance education quality.
This initiative encourages stakeholders to work together, addressing existing challenges and shaping a brighter educational future.
