Agriculture minister Sam Kawale says the government has got the first consignment of 4,000 metric tons of maize for about 3 million communities in the 15 districts in the country.
He made the remarks in Blantyre at the World Food Programme on Thursday.
Kawale told ProjectM that Malawi has purchased 47,693 metric tons of maize to the tune of US$35 million from Tanzania.
“The government is committed to providing food to households that are food insecure due to the devastation of the natural disasters which hit Malawi for three consecutive years,” he said.
According to the minister the first consignment of 4,000 metric tons has arrived and the remaining metric tons will be in the country by March this year.
Malawi County Director for World Food Programme, Simon Denhere acknowledged that Malawi has received the first consignment of maize from Tanzania.
He said his organisation is honoured to assist the Malawi government in the feeding programs in bringing the food insecurity gap.
“I am thankful to the World Bank through the Malawi Food System and Resilience Project (MFSRP) for funding,” he said.
The benefiting districts include Nsanje, Chikwawa, Neno, Mangochi and Blantyre.
