Macra Dates Creatives On Digitalisation

Malawi Communications and Regulatory Authority (Macra) held an interactive session with the creative industry in the country in Lilongwe.

A statement from Macra says the sessions centred on how the digitalisation can play a role in building the digital economy through the industry.

MACRA Director Daud Suleman appealed to creatives to embrace innovation.

“The time has come for Malawi to take charge of its digital creative economy. We must build our own platforms, create our own opportunities and ensure that our artists benefit directly from their work,” he said.

Special Advisor to the President on Creative Industries Qabaniso Malewezi, who was the Guest of Honour, commended MACRA for responding to the call for the meeting.

He urged creatives to be active participants in embracing digitalisation in the industry.

Said Malewezi: “We must be interested, informed and actively involved to drive the development we seek. With the upcoming operationalisation of the National Arts and Heritage Council, we have a crucial bridge between government and creative sector. Understanding its role and opportunities will be key to meaningful progress,” he said.

One of the creatives, who attended the event Kelvin Before Gumbi applauded MACRA for its efforts is pushing Malawi’s creatives to produce high quality content that can appeal to a wider audience.

However, he said with about one million online users in the country monetisation of creative industry through digitalisation remains a stumbling block.

The session drew creatives from film production, animators, visual Arts, digital content creators and musicians.
