Malawi’s music legend Soldier Lucius Banda continues to make history, this time, posthumously, as his entire music catalog has been signed to global music powerhouse Universal Music Group, in a deal spearheaded by Gold Mountain Music, led by veteran producer Tapps Bandawe.
The four-year deal covers all of Lucius Banda’s albums and music compositions, making it one of the biggest international moves ever for Malawian music. This comes in addition to a previously signed seven-year administration deal between Gold Mountain and Universal.
Speaking about the signing, Tapps Bandawe, who has worked with Lucius on numerous projects, said the agreement is a major step forward not only for Lucius’ legacy but for Malawian music as a whole.
“Lucius Banda has the biggest and most important music catalog in Malawi’s history. To have it signed under the biggest music and entertainment company in the world means Malawian music is going places,” said Tapps.
He explained that the deal opens doors for Lucius’ music to be used in international films, television shows, and digital platforms, bringing the iconic artist’s message to a global audience.
“This is not just a win for Lucius, but for Malawi. His music can now reach new ears across the world, and that’s powerful,” Tapps added.
Lucius Banda’s son, Johnny Zembani, said the family is proud of the deal and hopes it will help preserve his father’s legacy for future generations.
“My father stood for truth, justice, and the voice of the voiceless. This deal makes sure his message lives on. We’re grateful to Tapps and his team for helping us take this bold step.” said Johnny.
Lucius Banda, who passed away last year, is remembered not just as a musician, but as a voice for the people. Through albums like Down Babylon, Cease Fire, Cell 51, and Unity, he used music to challenge injustice and unite the nation.
