LUANAR STUDENT VENTURES INTO CHIA SEED FARMING

In a groundbreaking move, Lloyd Loyal Banda, a final-year agronomy student at Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), is revolutionizing Malawi’s agricultural landscape with chia seed farming.

“I’m passionate about sustainable agriculture and drawn to Chia seeds’ nutritional values, market demand and export opportunities,” Banda explained.

“This project aligns with my academic interests, personal values and economic goals.”

Banda’s initiative focuses on Salvia Hispanica L, an annual herbaceous plant whose seeds offer numerous health benefits.

“Chia seeds are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, fibre and protein, reducing inflammation, improving blood lipid profiles and cancer risk,” he noted.

Edwin Joseph, Field Assistant at LUANAR’s Crop and Soil Sciences Department echoed Banda’s sentiments.

“Chia seed production is not complicated; it requires minimal fertiliser, is drought-resistant and adaptable to diverse weather conditions and soil types.”

Banda’s project addresses Malawi’s agricultural dependence on traditional crops like maize and tobacco.

“Chia seeds provide supplemental income, enhance soil health and productivity and are suitable for agriculture due to low input requirements.”

However, Banda acknowledges challenges faced.

“Limited knowledge and experience in Chia crop farming can lead to mistakes and losses. Farmers need expertise through Chia crop farming classes.”

Banda aims at expanding cultivation, establish processing facilities and implement contract farming models.

“I envision Chia seeds as a major Malawian crop, boosting local economic growth and export markets.”

To achieve this vision, Banda invites collaboration.

“I encourage farmers, researchers and investors to join me in harnessing Chia seeds’ potential for sustainable agriculture and rural development.”
