LUANAR GRADUATE THRIVES IN POULTRY BUSINESS

Karonga-based youthful innovator-cum entrepreneur, Maclean Gondwe has set up a poultry farm barely a year after graduating.

The 24-year-old has also used knowledge from school to venture into a manufacturing business that has seen him inventing portable incubators, rechargeable generators, and organic fertilizers, just to mention a few.

The Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR) graduate has told ProjectM in an interview that his venture started in 2023 after graduating.

“Soon after leaving school, I invented a potable incubator which I sold at K30,000,” Gondwe said.

Using the 30 thousand kwacha, Gondwe bought two trays of eggs which he hatched using one of his home-made incubators.

“I can confirm that the chicks hatched from those two egg trays set up a chain reaction of my poultry farming that has seen the number of chickens grow to 400 live birds,” said Gondwe.

He said most of his chickens are sold or exported to Tanzania where they are fetching good prices.

“Currently, I am only exporting because in Tanzania, chickens fetch good prices. Of course I have planned to sell most of them in December this year,” he said.

Currently, he has employed two permanent workers who are responsible for taking care of the poultry farm shop based in Karonga.

The innovator plans to boast his manufacturing business from the poultry business proceeds.

His vision is to see his farm grow into a major exporting business based in Karonga district.
