Local Entrepreneur Fights Plastic Pollution With Innovative Briquette Solution

A Blantyre based young entrepreneur, Moses Kamchedzera, has developed an innovative solution to tackle plastic pollution in the country.

Kamchedzera, founder and manager of Waste and Innovation Hub, a registered start up company, has been manually producing briquettes from plastic waste materials which they collect and turn them to briquettes as a sustainable alternative to charcoal.

The 24-year-old energy engineer, who graduated from the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) last year, was motivated to find a solution to plastic pollution after witnessing its devastating impact on communities and the environment.

“I was concerned about the pollution caused by plastics and the harm it was causing to our communities, land, and water, I decided to research and find a solution to this problem, and that’s how I came up with the idea of producing briquettes from waste materials.” Said Kamchezera.

Kamchedzera’s initiative has caught the attention of Briquette Masters, a company that has partnered with him to scale up production.

Briquette Masters is currently in the process of procuring machines that will enable large-scale production of briquettes for sale.

Environmental activist, Chidombe Msisya, praised Kamchedzera’s initiative, saying, “We must act now to protect our planet, for the future we want is the future we create. Innovations like this briquette solution are crucial in our fight against plastic pollution and climate change.”

Kamchedzera’s partnership with Briquette Masters is expected to make a significant impact in the fight against plastic pollution in Malawi.

“When the machine is here, we will be able to start producing large quantities for sell, my goal it protect the country from plastic pollution as the quote we says there is no country B,” added Kamchezera.
