LILONGWE WOMEN’S GROUP FINDS GOLD IN GARBAGE

A group of entrepreneurial women from Mtandire township in Lilongwe has turned an unlikely business idea into a thriving business venture.

The group, operating under the name ‘Mwatikonde Federation Club’, is a leading producer and supplier of organic fertilizers to farmers around Mtandire township.

Under the leadership of it’s chairperson, Norah Baziwelo, the group is working tirelessly to produce high-quality organic fertilizers using waste products collected around Lilongwe city.

Baziwelo has told ProjectM that the club’s success story began with a simple observation of the vast amount of waste materials generated in Lilongwe city.

“Seeing an opportunity, we decided to start collecting these waste materials and convert them into compost manure,” Baziwelo said.

Among others, the group collects biodegradable waste materials from Lilongwe which are then carefully sorted and processed into manure.

Through the venture, the group, comprising mostly widows, is able to generate enough income for it’s members to share and support their families.

“We are proud to be contributing to the growth of agriculture in our community while also improving our own livelihoods,” said Baziwelo.

The group’s success story has already attracted interest from several stakeholders including the European Union (EU) which trained them on how they can make extra fortune through the venture.

Meanwhile, area 25 based farmer, Mariet Kaluzi has commended the women for offering local farmers with an affordable fertilizer option.

“In the age when chemical Fertilizer is both expensive and inaccessible at times, these women are really helping us,” said Kaluzi.
