Lilongwe Girls Shine Again in Drama Competition

Lilongwe Girls Secondary School has once again proven its artistic prowess after winning the Central West Education Division ATEM drama competition held at Kamuzu Institute for Sports in Lilongwe.

This comes three weeks after their victory at the 17th edition of the National Schools Arts Festival (Nasfest) International Youth Cultural Festival.

Their latest performance impressed both the judges and the audience, earning them the top prize of K500,000.

“We are so proud of our girls. They worked hard, and they really deserved this. Their message, stage presence, and teamwork were powerful,” said Desire Namachotsa, one of the school’s drama mentors.

St. Maria Goreti Girls Secondary School came second and received K300,000 while Kamuzu Barracks Secondary School took third place with K200,000.

The 2025 drama contest, sponsored by Standard Bank to the tune of K20 million, attracted 10 secondary schools from the Central West Education Division.

According to Lucius Zimba, Chairperson for ATEM Central West, the this year’s theme focused on human trafficking, encouraging students to raise awareness through drama.

“Schools have been motivated by this, and we have seen stiff competition so far. The support from Standard Bank has made a big difference. This competition brings out the best in students. It’s not just about acting, but also about using art to communicate real-life issues,” he said.

All three schools have now qualified for the national grand finals of the ATEM drama competition, which will take place from May 17 to 18, 2025. They will face off against top schools from other divisions.

“We are ready for the challenge, we want to keep making our school proud.” said a student from Lilongwe Girls.

Other participating schools included Kabwabwa, New Generation Private, Likuni Boys, Mlodza, WK Foundation, Mbidzi, Nalikule Demonstration and Hope Greenlight.

The national winners will walk away with even bigger prizes; K2 million for first place, K1 million for second and K500,000 for third.
