LILONGWE-BASED INVENTS ANIMAL FEED CUTTING DEVICE

Animal farmers, who have been facing problems in cutting and processing animal feed, will find life easier following the invention of portable animal feed cutting device.

Lilongwe-based youthful innovator Innocent Mandili has developed the feed cutting device for goat and cattle farmers.

The 18-year-old has told ProjectM in an exclusive interview that the device has been approved and received a nod from experts from the Chitedze Research Station.

The device operates by rotating a wheel that has a cutting device inside and cuts the feed in sizes desired by the farmer.

“I am calling this device a feed cutter, which essentially means a device for cutting feed,” said Mandili.

He said his device is unique as it can be operated manually without using fuel or too much manpower.

“With little effort, a farmer can cut 30-40 kilograms of feed per hour using this device,” said Mandili.

Currently, Mandili has already received orders from animal farmers from Kasiya Extension Planning Area (EPA) and Nthawi Farms, a renowned crop and animal farm located in Lilongwe.

“Soon after delivering these orders, I am planning to venture into full scale production because researchers from Chitedze Research Station have already started pushing me to deliver more machines,” he said.

A visit by ProjectM at his company, MI Technologies and Innovation in Chitedze in the outskirts of Lilongwe on Sunday found Mandili assembling one of the devices expected to be delivered this week.

He has since called for support from agricultural players, saying it will ease the burden of farmers.
