LILONGWE-BASED INNOVATOR CREATES DIGITAL VENDORS REGISTRY

A 23-year-old John Daka, under the banner of Daka Technologies and Innovations Company has created a Vendors Registry System to ease the registration process for City Councils in the country.

Daka, who hails from Malembe village, Traditional Authority Chitukula in Lilongwe is a final year student at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), studying Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.

The company offers tech-solutions such as software, website, App development and graphics designing.

They also sell innovative components such as Arduino starter kits, raspberry pi and graphics tablets.

He said: “We will work first with the Zomba City Council to improve and deploy the system and possibly integrate with all councils in Malawi to ease the vendor registration process in each council.”

Daka told ProjectM that it all started when Muuni Fund and Malawi Communications and Regulatory Authority (MACRA) called for innovators to apply and offer solutions that can be changed to specific aspects of each council.

‘’I managed to apply through Muuni Fund website where I was finally given the platform to create the system,” said Daka.

This is a user-friendly tool that will aid in the digitalization of the vendor registration process in Malawi and will have a great impact on the cost associated with the manual system currently being used in the country.

Daka emphasised that his company aims to develop more systems in the future that will help improve the economic growth of this country and people’s well- being

He said: “This proactive approach will also allow a modern way of operation that will provide vendors with the opportunity, to get registered on the system and share the products they sell which will be accessible to potential customers thereby improving revenue for vendors and get the economy of this Nation to new heights.’’

Daka said that one of the challenges facing innovators in the country is funding.

The innovator said despite having all the skills, they lack the resources to boost their skills.

He has advised the youth who have potential innovators to make use of the skills.

“The path to success is characterised by sacrifices and dedication. It is through hard work that we can transform and achieve greatness,’’ added Daka.

He said has managed to employ and form a team of 11 people including software developers, graphics designers, videographers and accountants while 90 percent of this team are University students because he believes that the youth have the potential to make a difference.
