Chisomo Youth Organisation, a local non-governmental organisation (NGO) in Karonga District, is pioneering is manufacturing plastic bricks and tiles from plastic helping in environmental conservation and youth empowerment.
In an interview with Projectm Davie Kitalo director for the organisation said they started in 2013 as a youth club. Chisomo Youth Organisation officially registered with the National Youth Council of Malawi in 2020.
The organisation addresses pressing issues such as drug and substance abuse, early marriages, and unemployment among the youth.
“We saw the need to engage youth in meaningful activities, our partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) introduced us to plastic brick-making, and it’s been a game-changer,” said Kitalo
The organisation collaborates with 30 youth clubs in Karonga, producing plastic bricks and tiles, although sales have not commenced due to lack of familiarity with the products, plans are underway to construct a demonstration structure.
Their raw materials are waste plastics which are collected in Karonga District. They mix it together with sand.
“As we are close to Tanzania where the production of plastics is very high, this makes Karonga to be one of the districts in danger of plastic pollution, this idea came to protect our district from that pollution,” said Kitalo.
Symon Mwenefumbo, a beneficiary of the project, has manufactured 3,000 bricks and sold 1,500, generating significant profits on his own.
“I am thrilled to earn an income from something that helps our environment, Chisomo Youth Organisation has empowered me to take charge of my future,” said Mwenefumbo.
Environmental officer for Karonga district, Khumbo Mbeye ,has praised the initiative, saying the project showcases the potential for youth-led innovation in addressing plastic waste management in Malawi.
The organisation has enhanced community awareness on environmental conservation and sustainable waste management, reducing plastic waste in Karonga District.
