The Goshen Nationals Women’s Championship is set to kick off on Sunday and will run until May 19th at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
To promote the event, Goshen City provided uniforms for the 10 participating teams.
The goal is to identify and develop talented female football players who can represent Malawi at the international level.
According to Aubrey Kusakala, Public Relations Manager for Goshen City, the company is committed to supporting women’s football.
“We were impressed by the Scorchers’ performance at the 2023 Cosafa Women’s Championship, and we want to see our teams succeed globally,” he said.
Adellaide Migogo, Chairperson of the National Women’s Football Association, praised Goshen City for their support.
“This is a historic moment for women’s football in Malawi. We hope this championship will showcase the talent and potential of our female players,” she said.
The championship started with play-offs involving three teams from the regions: Mighty Wanderers Queens, Silver Strikers Ladies, and CY Sisters and Civil Service Women.
The winners will join the top two regional teams in the quarter-finals, scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
The Football Association of Malawi has contributed K50 million to the championship, co-sponsoring with Goshen City, which has contributed K21 million, making the total sponsorship K71 million.
