Chimwemwe Mwenefumbo, a farmer and innovator from Chigwere Village in Nkhata Bay district has transformed his community by harnessing hydro power to provide clean water and electricity.
After completing electrical engineering at Soche Technical College, the 33-year-old struggled to find employment due to financial constraints.
Undeterred, he opened a small restaurant, then ventured into farming in 2017.
However, challenges in irrigating his crops in the hilly terrain inspired him to create a hydro power station and the “Hydronic Lamp Pump,” which uses no fuel or electricity.
“This innovation has changed many lives, including my people from the community. Seeing my village access clean water and electricity at a minimal fee is my greatest achievement,” explained Mwenefumbo.
Over 30 households have benefited from this initiative, with Mwenefumbo aiming at connecting the entire village.
Although pipe shortages have limited his progress, covering only 250 meters, the impact can be seen.
Meanwhile, Group Village head Chigwere expressed gratitude for Mwenefumbo’s innovative solution, calling him a rescuer.
“Chimwemwe’s hydro power project has brought significant improvements to our village. We are proud of his dedication to community development. We will keep supporting him in what way we can,” explained Chigwere
Mwenefumbo’s achievement has earned him three awards, two from Airtel Malawi and one from the National Youth Council.
“I would like to go back to school to upgrade so that I can come up with something huge than this. I am happy now because I no longer struggle to irrigate my crops, with my electricity I have managed to open a small bakery,” emphasised Mwenefumbo
His determination serves as a testament to the power of innovation in addressing rural development challenges.
