IG SALUTES BLUE EAGLES: REWARDS PRIZE MONEY

Inspector General of Malawi Police Service (MPS) Merlyne Yolamu on Monday saluted Blue Eagles as she hosted them to a party at officers mess in Area 30 in Lilongwe after winning FDH Bank Cup on Sunday.

Blue Eagles, who were relegated to Malawi’s second tier last season, beat the top-flight league outfit and defending champions FCB Nyasa Bullets 3-2 on post-match penalties.

The match played at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe ended goalless in regulation in which Bullets wasted many scoring opportunities.

Following the historical victory, the IG directed that Blue Eagles should share the whole K35 million prize money as a token of appreciation, saying she is happy with the feat.

She said: “We are happy as Malawi Police Service that despite the setback the team has been facing after being relegated the team managed to get back on track and win this cup. The Eagle has soared higher than the rest.

This is despite being relegated last season from the super league. The players have demonstrated a never give up spirit. As a show of appreciation and to motivate them, they should share the whole prize money among themselves.

“Despite playing in the lower league the boys never gave up demonstrating the spirit of Eagle bird which is the symbol of Malawi Police Service. I am overwhelmed with excitement after clinching this trophy. The players have worked so hard to win this trophy beating super league teams.”

Central Region Football Association general secretary Antonio Manda said Blue Eagles had made the league proud.

“Beating Super League teams such as Silver Strikers and Bullets is no mean achievement. This is a great motivation for other teams in the Chipiku League that it is possible to win major trophies in the country. We are very proud of Blue Eagles,” he said.
