Hands of Hope, a newly established non-governmental organization in Zomba has unveiled plans to promote equity in education.
The organisation aims at providing opportunities for learning to vulnerable children with limited access to education.
The organization’s primary objective is to support underprivileged learners across primary and secondary schools.
These children risk being withdrawn from school due to lack of essential school supplies, school fees, and other necessary materials.
According to Executive Director Lumbani Mvula, the child education sponsorship programme targets 5,000 needy learners from all districts in the country.
Mvula emphasised the need for improved quality education as a major catalyst for the country’s development.
“Most children enrolling in primary and secondary schools today do not have essential school supplies such as textbooks, pens, and school uniforms. “If not supported, these learners, who are often orphans or vulnerable children with lifelong conditions, might be forced to drop out of school,” he said.
Mvula stressed that education promotes informed choices and helps break the cycle of violence and poverty through shared knowledge. He called for collective efforts from diverse stakeholders to promote and improve both male and female child education.
Naomi Banda, a 17-year-old beneficiary, echoed Mvula’s sentiments. The standard seven pupil at Chikupira Primary School in Zomba dropped out of school for two years due to financial insecurity. She is now committed to her studies as a payback for the support.
“I urge well-wishers to support us with assorted scholastic materials like school bags, exercise books, and school uniforms. Your kindness will enable us to discover our talents and excel in our endeavors,” said Naomi.
