GROUP PAINTS PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS

In an effort to reduce road accidents agroup known as Know Your Car (KYC) painted zebra crossings vicinity to some primary schools in the commercial city of Blantyre.

Chimwemwe Ligwese, Vice-Chairperson for Southern Region KYC said these road markings will act as a sign for drivers to slow down speed.

Speaking to ProjectM, Ligwese said if drivers observe the paintings it will a reduce road accidents.

“The painting crossings will act clear visual signals for drivers to reduce speed as they draw closer to it,” he said.

According to the vice-chairperson the zebra crossings have been painted at Lunzu, Misesa, Henry Henderson Institute (HHI) and Nansengwa Primary Schools,” he said.

He has since thanked Rainbow Paints and Libertas General Insurance for assisting them with paints.

Andson Chilambo, headteacher for HHI Primary School said the development would reduce road accidents.

“The pedestrian crossings will help our learners to cross the road safely on a safer site,” he said.

A learner, Chifundo Banda lamented that children were the victims of accidents whenever they want to cross the road.

She observed that most of times they were reporting to classes late due to congestion of traffic on the roads.

“This negatively affected their learning as they are always delayed by traffic jam, especially in the morning,” said Banda.
