Govt Pledges Support for Tourism Sector Growth

Government says it will continue implementing strategies that are vital in the growth of the country’s tourism sector, saying the sector possesses numerous economic opportunities.

President Lazarus Chakwera has made the remarks Thursday at the Bingu International Convention Centre in Lilongwe during the opening of a two-day 2025 Takulandilani Malawi International Tourism Expo (MITE).

Addressing hundreds of local and international tourism stakeholders, Chakwera said government is aware of the economic impact tourism can bring if proper strategies are put in place.

“My government is aware of the crucial roles Agriculture, Tourism, Mining and Manufacturing play in revitalising the country’s economy and that’s why government is focusing on these four also known as the ATMM strategy,” he said.

The president urged those taking part in the Expo to take time and learn about the opportunities in developing these sectors.

“Our country is slowly attracting investors with reports showing that other nations are already investing in the country,” said Chakwera.

The Malawi leader also underlined the need for international tourists to visit the country, saying government has put in place favourable conditions, including the removal of visas for close to 100 nationalities.

On her part, Minister of Tourism Vera Kamtukule said the 2025 Tourism Expo created a platform to showcase all aspects of the country including tourism, trade, education, health and other equally sectors.

“The goal of all this is to attract investment and business opportunities,” said Kamtukule.

The 2025 Tourism Expo, themed; Solidifying the Gains, brought together local and international partners including popular hotel brands and media personalities.

During the function, it was also revealed that close to 1 million tourists visit the country every year.
