GOVT DECLARES PRAYERS FOR THIS YEAR’S INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS

Government has said the 2024 Independence Celebrations for Malawi, scheduled for 6 July, 2024, will be marked by prayers as the country continues to mourn the former Vice-President Dr Saulos Chilima and eight others who were killed in the military aircraft crash last month in Mzimba.

Spokesperson for government Moses Kunkuyu said this year’s 6th July celebrations will not have entertainment like the previous years.

The Minister told ProjectM that although the mourning period declared by President Dr Lazarus Chakwera ended on 1 July, 2024 the president thought it wise to cancel all the entertainment.

“The 2024 July 6 celebrations will not have all sorts of events as it used to be,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Football Association of Malawi said football activities have been cancelled.

Malawi National Football Team was initially expected to play Mozambique on July 6.

The government spokesperson also said there will be prayers in the celebrations.

Malawi became independent from British colonial rule in 1964 and became a republic two years later.
