The government has declared a national mourning period of 21 days following the tragic death of the Malawi’s Vice-President Right Honourable Dr Saulos Klaus Chilima and eight others who died in a military aircraft crash on Monday at Chikangawa Forest in Mzimba District.
Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Coleen Zamba said on Tuesday in a press statement.
According to the statement President Dr Lazarus Chakwera has declared that the nation is to observe a period of 21 days of mourning.
“The mourning period starts from Tuesday (10 June, 2024 to 1 July, 2024,” reads part of the press statement.
According to the statement the president has also directed that all flags be flown at half-mast throughout the period of mourning.
The late Vice-President was expected to attend the burial ceremony of the former Minister of Justice, Attorney General and prominent lawyer the late Raphael Kasambara in Nkhata Bay on Monday.
But the military aircraft carrying him and eight others could not land at Mzuzu Airport due to bad weather.
On return to Lilongwe, the aircraft crashed in the Chikangawa Forest where he and eight others were killed in a plane crash.
Meanwhile, the burial arrangements will be announced in due course.
