Glow Foods in Mponela Dowa , a local horticultural enterprise, is making waves in Malawi’s agricultural sector with its innovative farming.
Founded in 2017 by Brenda Mwale, Glow Foods has established itself as a producer of high-quality food crops, including bananas, bell peppers, okra, green beans, maize and beans.
The company’s use of advanced irrigation methods and rain-fed farming techniques has enabled it to cultivate a diverse range of crops, making it a trusted supplier to local markets, hotels and educational institutions.
But Glow Foods’ impact goes beyond just producing high-quality crops. The company is also dedicated to empowering women and young micro-farmers through agricultural training and market access.
“We believe that by supporting local farmers, we can help to build a more sustainable and equitable agricultural sector.
“Our goal is to not only produce high-quality crops but also create opportunities for economic growth and development in our community,” Mwale explained.
Glow Foods’ team comprises nine full-time employees and over 50 part-time and seasonal employees, who work tirelessly to provide critical support during peak periods.
“Our part-time and seasonal workers are an integral part of our team. They bring valuable skills and experience to our operations and we are committed to providing them with fair compensation and opportunities for professional development,” said Mwale.
Glow Foods’ commitment to sustainability is also evident in its use of bio-char fertilizer, which reduces production costs while aiding in soil restoration.
Peter Mwitha, an agricultural expert, praised Glow Foods’ innovative approaches to farming, calling it a shining example of what can be achieved through sustainable agriculture practices.
Glow Foods plans to expand its operations to serve international export markets. The company also plans to venture into value addition, processing its cultivated food crops into nutritious and accessible food products.
Glow Foods has already started implementing its expansion plans with the goal of increasing its production capacity and reaching new markets.
